3 years on McClelland Avenue

written 22 May 2007 while the sun tried, at least, rising

there’s a small house
with a small front porch
and the grass has grown all wide around there
there’s a mower
dirt and rusting
the chord’s not pulled and the tank has plenty to spare
there’s a frayed rope
from a tree limb
and a black tire in the trash that won’t be swinging again
there’s a basement
with a bad leak
and the paint we used isn’t bringing it in
there’s a window
but there isn’t a curtain
i wouldn’t allow it, not now and not then
there’s a pad lock
and a letter from the law
that says i shouldn’t try and get back in there again.
