Well, the guy definitely could afford it, I think he just didn't want to end up with a bunch of extra pennies.

Which he could've thrown the server's way.

I'm not on one side or the other and I definitely agree, just ask first. But for all I know, the guy may have asked. I just found it interesting.

Regardless of who the server is, its already a little awkward if you havent spared anything to tip... but if youre short and cant tip which happens, helping yourself to the tip jar - someone elses money - adds insult to injury. It obviously wasnt about the money at all because a penny is worth nothing... the whole principle and way the guy assumed it would be okay was insulting.

In the same situation I would have awkwardly admitted I was short and asked if he minded I take a penny out the jar. If he'd said no I still would have expected that possibility and maybe ordered something else, or offered to come back and bring the penny. Then I would have succeeded in showing respect where its due. I definitely wouldnt have tried to make the server feel even smaller and more insulted by being snide, then going off to enjoy a drink I couldnt have afforded without his help.

After all if I didnt want to pay for service, I'd have made my own drink at home.
