…everyone eventually goes away, and it’s almost always better to be the person leaving than the people left behind.

It reminds me of Owuor the cook. He was a wise and patient Kenyan who taught me many things in a very short space of time.

The little exiled German family that he’d loyally followed through Africa most of his life, with his dog in tow, had decided to leave him behind and make a new life in Germany. The night before they were to leave they discovered Owuor, now old and grey haired, packed with a blanket wrapped around him ready to leave without saying goodbye. He explained, “I am also going on safari. Please understand. The first person to go on safari has dry eyes.”

I don’t think I can ever forget him.

  • Yeah, exactly. I hadn’t realized what he meant when he said that but…exactly.

I could really go for a scooter, a foreign country, $1000 and a month to kill…

  • Yeah - I think it would be tight to go to Japan, but the most hybridest, mp3-playingest, compartment-having-est scooter I could afford, ferry over to China, and from there just drive until I hit Portugal.
