I found another solution that actually uses real Google icons. Point Safari to “www.google.com/m” this is different than what you get when you go directly to gmail. You’ll notice a nice little blue bar at the top that allows linking to different applications. Click on Gmail, then go through the standard “+/Add to Home Screen” link. Icons are defined for Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Docs..

You’re right, Mike - it looks like Google has changed how Gmail handles images pasted directly into an email’s subject.

Bummer. I’ll try and figure out another solution that can work easily for everyone.

This hasn’t worked for on my iPhone. Gmail is not showing me the images. When I look at it on a normal PC I need to click the “Show Images” button, but I don’t see that option on the phone.
