written 28 Apr 2009 in the earliest morning

Nathan, on a bike, a blue bikeAnd we’re not talking $4 mochachinos here. According to this BikePGH article, it costs $0.95 / day to own and operate a bike. And you don’t have to tip anyone.

As you probably may or probably may not know, I’m currently on the road, for awhile. Right now I’m staying in Austin, TX and I’m blown away by the biking infrastructure here. If you take a look at what this city has done and then compare it to our own beloved Pittsburgh, it’s both a little heartbreaking and equally inspiring.

Why Cyclists Have to be Assholes

Motorists often feel and state that there isn’t room for bicycles on the street. Some beep and scream and go as far as to try and run people off the road. These people are fools, ignorant to the law, and a disgrace to humanity. Truly, unamerican, at the least, violent criminals at worst.

Puma Urban Mobility BikePuma has come out with a new version of their Urban Mobility Bike, pretty similar to the original foldable velo aimed at those city dwelling soldiers who know the virtues of having a bike you can easily lock up or take onto the bus with you. Climbing Squirrel Hill

Last year I conquered Squirrel Hill on an every other day basis in an 8 mile loop from Shadyside, over the hill, into Oakland and back. But alas, those were different times and in recent months I’d fallen out of shape and determination. Of course, a still sparkling New Year has relieved me of such burdens, and I’m back on the bike (just in time for Winter). This morning I decided to once again make headway into surmounting Squirrel Hill and injecting a healthy dose of “holy fuck!” into my lungs.

Great Bike News for Pittsburgh

Bike Lanes Across Birminghame BridgeThere have been a lot of really great things coming out of Bike Pittsburgh working with the city and PennDOT lately. The Alternative Transportation Festival is this weekend, celebrating hybrid cars, peddle pushing and the holy pedestrian. A recent study of the 60 largest US cities shows that Pittsburgh (ranked 57th largest city) has the 17th highest bicycle commuter population. We ranked 8th when measuring how many people don’t even own cars (14% of us don’t) and 7th for taking public transportation (21% ride the bus or T). Also, the Birmingham Bridge which connects Oakland and the Hill to South Side just recently got striped with amazingly apt bike lanes. We checked this out over the weekend and the lanes are huge and very accommodating. This could be the first step on massive improvements to connecting Oakland to Downtown, as it’s right next to the highly controversial stretch of road between Oakland proper and Soho.
