Step by step walkthrough on how to host secure HTTPS:// SSL images for free with Dropbox so that you can use them on your PayPal checkout pages with Custom Page Styles.

PayPal is a pretty decent way to collect money online, though I vastly prefer Google Checkout for reasons I won’t get into here, there are times when you might find yourself needing to use PayPal (such as via Gravity Forms, as they don’t yet offer payment gateways other than Authorize.net and PayPal).

When doing so, you can slightly customize the checkout form that users see when they’re taken to PayPal’s site. These forms are a little bit ugly, even if you do customize them, but anyway, it’s possible and the point of this post is to show you how to get secure versions of your images. As PayPal tells you on their Custom Page Styles creator, if your images aren’t hosted on a secure server, your users’ browsers are going to pop up a message telling them that the page contains unsecure items and make it all the more likely that’ll scare them away from completing the transaction. So how can we get our images hosted on an SSL Certificate secured site without purchasing one just for this purpose?

Use Dropbox to Host Secure Images for your PayPal Custom Page Styles

Good ol’ Dropbox to the rescue. Dropbox is a free service (up to 2GB) which you can use to store files online, even back up particular files on your computer, and then access them anywhere. This includes sharing those files publicly. Here’s a rundown of how to do this, exactly.

Sign up for a Dropbox account. It’s free for up to 2GB of storage. You have to download program to your computer, but Dropbox can be so much more useful than just for the purposes of hosting a couple of images on PayPal, though if you don’t want it on your machine anymore, you can just delete it when you’re done with this process.

Once you’ve gone through the sign up process with Dropbox, sign into your account.

Click the Dropbox link near the top left of the page.

Click the Upload Icon right around the middle of the top of the page to upload your images.

Once you’ve uploaded them, you can drag and drop them into the Public Folder. This makes them viewable by anyone on the web, including for use on PayPal.

Click the Public Folder to view it’s contents.

Right click on the name of the file you want to use in PayPal and choose Copy public link.

A window will popup with the URL to the file, just copy that and paste it into PayPal where appropriate.

There you have it, HTTPS:// SSL Secure image hosting for absolutely no cost! Thanks Dropbox!

We’re unveiling the latest project here at ClickNathan.com in the next couple of weeks: Wand’rly Magazine. Wand’rly is an online publication for fulltime traveler types, and in every issue we’ll explore a specific location in North America with short story style articles describing some of our favorite spots in said locations. There’ll also be some suggestions on where to eat, where to stay, and what to do, of course.

The goal of the magazine is to help people who love to travel, and particularly those who do it on a fulltime or quite-a-bit-of-their-part time basis, find discounts and secrets on where the best places to stay are, and some perhaps lesser known things to do once you get there.

We’ve been traveling fulltime around here for the better part of four years, and before that countless cross-country roadtrips, train rides and plane tickets were tucked up under our belts. We call it a magazine because it’s not just another website, the same old layout with the same old approach: we’re looking to make it as close to the experience of reading a real magazine as possible, customized for your particular device, whether it’s sitting around the RV kitchen table with your laptop, doing a little light reading on your iPhone on a long haul through Kansas, or diving in via the best experience, in our opinion, via your iPad while sitting around the campfire waiting for the hot dogs to cook.

Whether you’re a traveling warrior trainhopper type or snowbird retirees living in your RV, our “family staff” ranges in age from a young set of parents with a 13 month old to pre-teens to closer to retirement age. We’ll show you the coolest bars to grab a local beer and the best things to do with your kids. Whether you want to hike a mountain or sit back on a tour bus, we’ve got you covered.

With loads of options for delivery, either via beautifully customized RSS Feeds or email updates, or by following us on Twitter, or any of the above website experiences, you can get Wand’rly how you want it.

We’ve also developed a lucrative but not overladen ad system which, unlike a paper magazine, means one small ad per article which is specifically focused on the region in which the issue covers, and we only accept advertising from establishments who’s products or services we’ve tried and can attest to their value.

We’re excited to get this up and running, and if you’d like to learn more, follow us on Twitter via the link above, or sign up for our newsletter at wandrlymagazine.com!

The US government is going to pass a law in about two weeks that will allow the recording and movie industries to effectively shut down any website that so much as links to what it determines to be copyrighted material. Even talking about how to download illegal material, or simply discussing that it exists will be enough to sue site owners and have their websites blocked. Sites that exist outside of US borders will have their domain names blocked, by law, by any US ISP.

This will change the web as it is now forever. YouTube never would have gotten off the ground had this law existed when it started. Facebook and Twitter will no longer be free and open forums. Google search results will be further filtered. Real, valuable content and the free flow of information that is the Internet will be hidden away forever. We have freedom of speech and freedom of the press in this country, but if this law is passed, those freedoms won’t extend to the Internet and will effectively be policed by the entertainment industry.

Please watch this video and then write to your congressmen and attend a town hall or at least spread the word in your social circles.
