Mobile phones have long been able to access the Web, but anyone who’s ever been to wherever.com via their phone knows it’s an exercise in frustration. Squashed images, missing content, a postage stamp screen; it’s more scrolling than browsing. Hence, designing for mobile phones became all about elimination. Eliminate images, content; eliminate functionality.

But as iPhone sales are approaching 5 million, mobile browsing is getting to be more and more like surfing the Web instead of just bathing in it.

Do I need an iPhone-customized website?

Do monkey’s need spacesuits? Of course not, as devices get better, mobile-specific sites become less necessary. So while you don’t need an iPhone friendly site, having one puts you that much closer to the moon.
