Coffee Shops out to Save the World
written 20 Aug 2008 over dinner
I caught an article in Pop City today about a coffee shop in Pittsburgh’s North Side owned and run by 7 friends who all moved to the city to make a difference. None of them had really lived or grown up here, though apparently a couple of them had some ties.
It’s a great little story and I’ll definitely be checking this out on our next loop through the PGH.

Coffee Shoppists
I spend a good deal of time in coffee shops around Pittsburgh’s East End. In doing so, I overhear quite a few conversations between employees/managers and potential employees being interviewed/customers. Now, I’m a huge advocate of keeping it local, particularly when it comes to coffee shops, but without fail these conversations always include some Starbucks-bashing. Quotes like “At least Starbucks is consistent, their coffee is always consistently burned” or “Starbucks is not a service-oriented coffee shop, they’re only out to make a profit no matter what.” I just wonder if this is jealousy driven or what?
