The New Arena
Plans to build a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins seem to be underway and “definitely likely.” I can’t understand this, in a city where you have to pay an extra dime for every dollars worth of drink just to help support a failing transit system; where property taxes for residents are the source of major controversy even as downtown businesses get tax cuts, how can it be possible that yet another new stadium could be in the works?
Can anyone justify how this is a necessary good for our city?
While those who depend on transit and own homes are forced to “just get by”, our sports teams are continued to be celebrated above and beyond the city’s means. I mean, for a hockey team who’s only two Stanley Cups happened 16 years ago, I think we might rethink the decision. Of course, the Pirates got that new stadium and look how awesome they are.
