Ma, Pa, Big Box and Laptop Shops

For all of their old time-iness and wiling away about the good ol’ days, our parents and grandparents did a great job at destroying the notion of supporting your local mom and pop in favor of filling up their rural and suburban communities with big box retailers and the ocean of steaming asphalt from which they island themselves. Today’s young liberal city dwellers seem to be largely moving towards smaller, more localized lifestyles, but of course we’re the same people who are more likely to shop online at the same time.

I wonder if my children and grandchildren, hunchbacked over their portable shopping devices, will look around their neighborhoods and pine for the day when it was possible to purchase something without requiring an Internet connection and some type of shipping option. By the time I’m too old to remember my own name, will there even be real stores?
