A Star Made Completely of Diamond

Lucy, the literal diamond in the sky, previously a starWhen children’s songs come to life…

I can’t believe I only heard about this today, but apparently there is a star made completely of diamond a mere 50 light years away from Earth, in everyone’s favorite hotspot vacation galaxy, Centaurus. According to the BBC:

Twinkling in the sky is a diamond star of 10 billion trillion trillion carats, astronomers have discovered. The cosmic diamond is a chunk of crystallised carbon, 4,000 km across… It’s the compressed heart of an old star that was once bright like our Sun but has since faded and shrunk. Astronomers have decided to call the star “Lucy” after the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Let the BBC tell you all about it.
