Ohhhbama…

The question in this race is “how we grow faster”…

That was President Obama’s response to his rival Mitt Romney as both of them held separate campaign stops in Ohio. His complete statement was:

“The debate in this election is about how we grow faster, and how we create more jobs and how we pay down our debt. That’s the question facing the American voter.”

My question is, why? Why do we constantly focus on “more growth”, on growing our economy more and more quickly, on continuing to allow America to be completely dependent on more and more consumerism. We are taxed on our income, but not on our spending (at least not by the Federal Government, in general). We put so much value on creating and purchasing, and every election we’re back to the same old conversation: the economy isn’t where it should be.

Nevermind that the average American lives better than what kings do in some other countries.

Maybe if our leaders began putting more emphasis on us saving our money, of us learning how to exist in equilibrium with our needs and not just chase eternally after our wants, we’d be able to address some things that actually matter in this country, rather than rallying everyone around the idea that “If I’m the President, you’ll be a little bit richer.”
